To determine if you have curly or wavy hair, there are a few things you can look for:
-
Curl pattern: Curly hair typically has a more defined curl pattern, while wavy hair has a looser, less defined pattern. Take a small section of hair and observe the shape of the curl - is it a tight spiral, or more of a wave-like shape?
-
Volume: Curly hair tends to be more voluminous than wavy hair. If your hair is thick and tends to get frizzy, it may be more curly than wavy.
-
Texture: Curly hair can be coarser in texture than wavy hair, which tends to be smoother and softer.
To better determine your hair type, you can also try the "plopping" method. After washing and conditioning your hair, gently blot it with a towel to remove excess moisture. Then, apply a styling product and scrunch your hair up towards your scalp. Use a t-shirt or microfiber towel to gently wrap your hair in a turban-like shape, leaving it to air dry. If your hair dries with defined, tight curls, it's likely curly. If it dries with looser, more relaxed waves, it's likely wavy.
